Sa Chiemo
The direct translation of Sa Chiemo is “time to eat”. We usually don’t use those words unless there is company. There would not be a need to announce it. As I ate alone, I allowed myself to imagine what it would be like to eat a meal with a companion. I couldn’t afford to pay for two meals, but there was a second chair inviting company. I had gotten used to keeping my few utensils in the cupboard and opted for napkins that I could easily throw away. I know have a friend to share all my meals with and I am grateful. This painting is a celebration, marked by the lit candles, of the liminal space I spent waiting for a day I wouldn’t be eating alone.
